[xi]The grinding rock (that's what Chaw'se means in Miwok) is a huge, natural outcropping of limestone. The unique feature of the rock is the hundreds of indentations, all over its surface. They are mortar cups, and there are said to be 1,185 of them, the greatest number found on a single rock in California.
