The Quorn is either legendary or infamous in the model engineering community, depending on whether or not you've actually finished buiding one. I haven't even started :-) See also the Bonelle Tool and Cutter Grinder by Don Willis for what is in many respects an updated Quorn with free plans and no castings required.
I've got a Quorn spindle in which I modified the preload by using "wave washers" from McMaster Carr. IIRC they're specified by diameter and material thickness which governs the spring rate. For the Quorn, a preload of 8 pounds is suggested so I looked for washers that could be compressed to a point to provide that.

The plans call for a 0.600″ bore, but 0.595″ is a better minor thread diameter for a 5/8-32 thread. I added a 0.070″ thread relief groove behind the 0.250″ length called out in the plans. There was sufficient room for this without interfering with the hole for the forward oil tube.
