7/28/17 - Drove Schofield south from Marble. There is evidence of several large avalanches that have been cleared. A couple of the washes south of Crystal City have been filled. The snow bridge at the bottom of the Punchbowl has been clear of the road bed for quite a while. CR 317 at the very south end has suffered from several mud slides.
It appears you will take Route 133 to Marble for the Crystal Mill. This goes through Redstone, an interesting old town with an historic home, Redstone Castle, that can be toured. Also, there are Coke ovens just outside town. You can hire a Jeep & driver in Marble to visit the mill, don't even think of taking an SUV there.

The mill is just outside the town of Marble Colorado. It's accessible only from June through November. You can get there by a 4-wheel drive road. The trail itself is a visual feast. It's about a 10-mile, round-trip excursion from Marble to the mill, and then the ghost town of Crystal, beyond. Guest post by my wife, Camilla Bates. Crystal Mill near Marble, Colorado is one of the most photographed sites in the state. The fact that I have lived only 2 hours away from it for the last 12 years and never visited had been on my mind recently, so when my parents and brother came to visit, I knew where to take them.
The hike is located in the small town of Marble, about 40 minutes east of Carbondale on Highway 133. Drive through the town and past beautiful Beaver Lake and find a place to park before the road turns into a smaller 4x4 road. It's possible to drive to Crystal Mill with a high clearance 4x4, but hiking there is definitely recommended.
The other end of the "road that never ends" through the aspen trees. . . Erin even made up a song: "this is the road that never ends, it goes on and on my friend, some crazy people started driving it not knowing what it was, and then they kept on driving it forever just because. . ." (they really really didn't want to turn around and go back the same way they came) LOL!

For as iconic as Crystal Mill is, it is tough to get there by any means other than by foot (or perhaps dirt bike). And, as other reviewers have said, you're only allowed to view the mill from across the river, up high. To get down to the waters edge you have to pay $10 per person. Professional photographers pay $50 to get down to the water.
The last time that I visited the Crystal mill (mid 90's) one could get from Marble to Crystal without a four wheel drive vehicle provided one drove carefully and with a good ground clearance vehicle. A pickup truck would have absolutely no difficulty. I never used 4WD, even though I had it available, in my wanderings in the area.

The Crystal Mill site is located in an historic, picturesque, remote, wooded area well worth the difficulty in getting there. It was a hydro-electric power plant that was used for mining from the 1890s until 1917 and is located between Marble Colorado and Crystal City (a ghost town).
