Ive got a bridgeport type mill, r8 spindle. Im in the process of designing and building a power drawbar using a butterfly impact, as done by many on youtube. My question is this. What torque should be made on the drawbar when tight? Does it vary with cutter size? Does a 1/4" endmill need the same torque as a r8 4" facemill?

Just screw the 2 extension sleeves to the 5/16 bolts on top of the mill, mount the adapter plate, and bolt the power draw bar to the plate, the 3rd stand is 3/8 shorter than the other two and as you can see from the picture sits on top of the head casting.

I use a right angle impact driver along with a right angle drill adaptor with a 3/4" socket. It was cheap and works, plus you can use the impact driver for other work, as needed. The trigger is up against the mill head, so a slight pressure activates it You can hold the driver near its bottom.

It's fairly simple as you'd expect. It looks rather like the Kurt and Align drawbar engagement solenoids that are widely used on US Bridgeport-type machines fitted with the R8 collet system.
