In 1686 a large stone windmill was built on a nearby hill, doubling as a watch tower. It had very thick walls with several square loopholes, and downward-facing projections at the top for pouring hot liquids and/or rocks down on attackers. The mill was attacked by Iroquois raiders in 1687. The fort was burned down by the Iroquois in 1691.
