Oct 17, 2020. #1. Hello, I am looking for metal milling machine recommendations as my current one is giving me issues and its older so its time for an upgrade. I am looking for a single phase 220 or 120 volt machine that would have a DRO, power feed and is a tight machine meaning no slop. I am hoping to spend $6000 or less.

Short answer: Get a 220V 3 phase and build a Rotary Phase Converter or get a VFD. The motor is pretty common and cheap for both. You can also get a transformer pretty easy and for about the same money as a "just go out and buy it" motor (either can be had free or nearly so on a "good deal") so you can keep the high voltage motor.

Just an FYI, if you're powering the VFD with single phase input and it's a 3-phase input model then you need to derate the output by 50%. Oh, and you definitely do not need that $40 switch from Digi-Key. I like using the 3-wire control wiring scheme and that's what I've used on my mill and lathe. Ed

If you are handy, this maybe the way to go. If you do an EBay search for "phase plans" I'm sure you will find them. The unit looked good from what I could see. I like running 3 phase power on any machine tools. With single phase you lose the ability to reverse the motor. I do allot of power tapping.

After I got a mill with a 3-phase motor powered by a VFD and realized how smooth it ran, and how versatile the variable speed is I very quickly converted my lathe from single phase to 3-phase.
